ENDANGERED CLOSERS
The traditional, closer, role is disappearing as teams increasingly spread save opportunities across multiple relievers. In the 50 years through 2018, the number of pitchers recording a save never exceeded 165 in a season. Since then, outside of the shortened 2020 season, at least 198 pitchers have recorded a save every season. Through 8/5, 222 pitchers have recorded a save this season, or just 1 shy of the record in 2024.
