Through 7/21, the New York Mets had the 5th worst record in baseball (43-59) despite having the highest payroll. The Mets are on pace for 68 wins this season — which would come at a cost of $5.2 million each. Since at least 2000, that’s the highest inflation-adjusted cost per win in a season, beating the prior record of $4.8 million (also from the Mets) in 2023.
