WORST TO FIRST

Through week 13, the NFL’s top-ranked AFC and NFC teams were the New England Patriots and the Chicago Bears, neither of whom made the playoffs last year. The only other time that the top-seeded playoff teams in each conference had failed to make the previous year’s playoffs was in 1992, when the Steelers won the AFC and the 49ers won the NFC.
